Spend a Day at SEA

About the Experience

This one-day immersive marine science education experience for 6-12 grade students will introduce students to their local habitats while allowing them to conduct hands-on marine science data collection. Students will learn fundamental concepts of marine and atmospheric science in the context of the Mississippi Sound coastal environments and ecosystems, while engaging in hands-on activities that demonstrate the collection of marine and atmospheric science data. This will take place aboard a Ship Island Ferry in the Mississippi Sound and at Ship Island.
Accessibility: Students will need to be able to spend the day in the sun and heat while using sampling equipment on Ship Island.
PROGRAM INCLUDES:
  • A day aboard the Ship Island Ferry in the Mississippi Sound and at Ship Island
  • Equipment and supplies
  • Lunch
  • MSU, NGI and MSAQ educators and staff
OBJECTIVES:
  • Introduce participating students to fundamental concepts of marine and atmospheric science in the context of the Mississippi Sound coastal environments and ecosystems.
  • Demonstrate ongoing research being conducted in the Mississippi Sound by MSU and Mississippi Aquarium scientists.
  • Guide participating students in hands-on activities that demonstrate the collection of marine and atmospheric science data.
  • Introduce students to career paths in marine and atmospheric science.
ITINERARY:
  • 8:30AM Drop-off
  • 8:30AM - 9AM Introductory remarks from scientists and safety briefing by ferry captain and crew.
  • 9AM - 10AM: Ferry to Ship Island and conduct marine scientific data collection and demonstration modules on marine species, coastal weather and storms, water quality, seafloor sediment/benthic habitat.
  • 10AM - 12:30PM: Hike around the west tip of Ship Island exploring native flora and fauna.
  • 12:30PM - 1PM: Lunch at the Ship Island pavilion.
  • 1PM - 1:45PM: Tour of Fort Massachusetts and exploration of how geography effects history.
  • 1:45PM - 2:30PM: Presentation of career pathways in marine science, technology, and engineering.
  • 2:30PM - 3:30PM: Return to Gulfport Harbor.
  • 3:30PM Wrap-up and concluding remarks, and pick-up.
