Direct Report: Director of Guest Experience

Position Summary

The Supervisor for Community Outreach will create, implement and grow Mississippi Aquarium’s Community Outreach Department. This position will be responsible for managing all aspects of MSAQ’s Mobile Marine Unit, leading virtual learning programs across the state and beyond. This position will work closely with other members of the Guest Experience team to include Volunteers, Visitor Services, Education and Content Development. The Community Outreach department will require extensive travel, networking and partner relations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2-4 years serving in an informal environmental education role
  • Minimum 4-year bachelor’s degree in education or related field
  • Strong background in facilitating ecology and life sciences lessons
  • Must have previous animal ambassador handling and training experience
  • Certification with the National Association for Interpretation is preferred
  • Must have strong verbal and writing skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the success of Mississippi Aquarium’s Community Outreach Department; areas include Mobile Marine Unit, virtual learning and offsite community events
  • Create a strategic plan for Mississippi Aquarium’s outreach program that meets our goal of reaching audiences across the state; include goals, objectives, timeline, evaluation techniques, etc.
  • Develop and facilitate STEAM-based lessons suitable for travel; align all lessons with
  • Mississippi’s College- and Career-Readiness Standards
  • Constantly evaluate audiences and programs; develop a strategic outreach plan to include assessment strategies and long-term growth
  • Maintain and organize materials, supplies and program paperwork
  • Create and develop a state-of-the-art virtual learning platform by utilizing the latest technological advances
  • Responsible for the handling and health of Mississippi Aquarium’s animal ambassadors during travel; attend all training and follow protocols outlined by the Animal Care Department
  • Actively participate in environmental education member-organizations on a local, state, and national level
  • Establish and maintain a standard of excellence in all aspects of day to day community relations as it relates to environmental education
  • Communicate effectively with school districts, teachers and event planners to ensure productive and valuable learning opportunities
  • Support Mississippi Aquarium’s conservation and research projects, and empower a love for learning for all team members and guests
  • Fill in and support daily operational needs when necessary
  • Work weekends, evenings, and overnights when necessary
  • Work in a collaborative team environment, cross-train and support all other Guest Experience areas with projects, planning, and training
