Position Title: Special Events Manager

Department: Sales and Marketing

Classification: Exempt  

Direct Report: Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Position Summary

The Special Events Manager contributes to the success of Mississippi Aquarium and its financial sustainability by creating in house special events, daily programming and traveling exhibits that generate revenue and increase attendance. This position will manage a portfolio of special events to enhance daily programming and the guests after hours experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business, tourism and hospitality or marketing
  • Minimum 12 years of experience in event management or hospitality
  • Exceptional organization skills
  • Attention to detail with strong verbal, writing and editing skills
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
  • Ability to effectively build relationships with clients and colleagues
  • Ability to effectively present information publicly
  • Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions
  • Flexible work schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism, standards, integrity and confidentiality
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and customer management software

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute Aquarium special events and programming to increase attendance; Work closely with internal teams to collaborate on ideas, concepts and event activation
  • Manage the coordination and implementation of all aspects of special event planning, including budgets, coordinating staff and volunteers, communicating with vendors, managing contracts and overseeing special event production; provide clear, concise and timely communication of detailed special event requirements to all departments
  • Collaborate with marketing team to produce promotional materials, communications and advertisements
  • Assist with media outreach, onsite media coverage and public relations related to the special event
  • Identify partnerships and cultivate relationships with potential sponsors and vendors
  • Develop profit and loss statement for special event approval; Create and monitor budgets and prepare all budget reports
  • Manage and maintain accurate special events calendar
  • Measure and report result of special events to determine revenue and brand building success
  • Capture and share best practices for events, analyze event performance, and build a strategy to drive business
  • Conduct competitive analysis and event surveys to keeps special events attractive to guests; Conduct market research to identify event opportunities
