Position Title: Public Relations and Communications Manager

Department: Sales and Marketing

Classification: Exempt

Direct Report: Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Position Summary

The Public Relations and Communications Manager contributes to the success of Mississippi Aquarium and its financial sustainability by increasing awareness of the Aquarium by creating and maintain a positive public image. This position will design and implement internal and external communication strategies. Ultimately, this position will promote and maintain a positive public image for the Aquarium.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in marketing or communications
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in event public relations or communications
  • Exceptional organization skills
  • Attention to detail with strong verbal, writing and editing skills
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
  • Ability to effectively build relationships with clients and colleagues
  • Ability to effectively present information publicly
  • Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions
  • Flexible work schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism, standards, integrity and confidentiality
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and customer management software

Responsibilities

  • Direct the public relations image of the facility. Establish and maintain relationships with media, industry influencers and key community and strategic partners
  • Develop an integrated communications plan for the Aquarium including content strategy for policy, education, conservation and animal care
  • Work closely with internal teams including marketing, sales, guest experience, education, research and animal care to ensure language is consistent, positive, appropriate, disseminated broadly and framed effectively
  • Draft, update, and implement all crisis communications plans, activities, ensuring prompt and effective crisis communications always
  • Plan and manage the public relations and internal communications programs designed to create and maintain a favorable public image of the Aquarium
  • Manage and maintain the Aquarium’s public image and identity, which includes brand management and effective, appropriate communication
  • Maintain the Aquarium’s PR and community event calendar. Work with multiple departments to ensure we are represented at events that best serve the mission of the Aquarium, our outreach and sales strategies
  • Conduct event meetings with internal teams regularly to discuss PR, community event and sales opportunities, check schedule availability and review the calendar
  • Operate with a conscious commitment to maximum exposure for the Aquarium and its events, through the most effective means possible. Analyze and disseminate event data to determine participation benefit. Track and influence media coverage
  • Remain current on industry trends
  • Seek public relations and media opportunities to properly promote the mission of the Aquarium. Assign opportunities appropriately
  • Work to ensure all PR and earned media are aligned and integrated with consistent message and voice
  • Provide communication support for other departments to ensure messaging needs are met and consistent
