Title: Housekeeping Lead  

Department: Facility Operations and Security

Classification: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Director of Facility Operations and/or the Vice President of Facility Operations

Direct Report(s): Housekeeping Associate(s)

Position Summary

The position requires a self-motivated and dedicated individual who will take direction from the Director of Facility Operations and/or the Vice President of Facility Operations, responsible for the proper implementation of daily requirements for the cleanliness of the overall Mississippi Aquarium facility and its supporting structures. This is intended and expected to be a very hands-on Lead position, that is actively involved in the cleaning of the facility but also helps train, coach, hire and provide direction to other members of the housekeeping team.

Qualifications

  • High school equivalent required
  • Must have 1 to 3 years’ experience in supervisory experience related to industrial cleaning.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel is a plus.
  • Proficiency at managing a budget and preparing forecast of unforeseen contingencies.
  • Must have the ability to read, write and speak the English language. (knowledge of other languages is a plus)
  • Must be able to think clearly, react quickly, and calmly to changes and/or emergency situations.
  • Time management and excellent organizational skills needed.  Able to balance and prioritize multiple duties and responsibilities.
  • Must handle confidential information responsibly.
  • Must have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Willingness to take direction and coaching from experienced staff members in order to improve your skills and enhance the guest experience.
  • Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team in a constantly changing environment as well as individually, with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which will include evenings, weekends and holidays.  
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced job and remain courteous, friendly and helpful to guests and staff at all times.

Position may involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous an unpredictable animal species, and potentially dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs.  Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required. (e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, and gowns)

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director of Facility Operations in implementing and formulating policies and objectives to ensure the safest and most efficient way of cleaning the facility.
  • Follow and enforce all Mississippi Aquarium policies and procedures.
  • Supervise, coach and guide a staff of up to 15 team members to ensure they maintain high morale and understand their role and its importance to the overall guest experience.  
  • Observe, evaluate and review team member performance for compliance with department standards including tracking performance, team member record keeping, scheduling and annual reviews as directed by the Director of Facility Operations.
  • Help management develop and monitor a highly motivated and productive team.
  • Monitor and control labor hours by adjusting staffing as necessary to reduce operational expenses per management team.
  • Maintain appropriate guest and employee relations at all times, ensuring guest and employee satisfaction and safety.
  • Maintain knowledge of and ensure that assigned personnel maintain knowledge of aquarium activities, promotions and operations to effectively answer questions from guests.
  • Ensure that proper operating procedures are always being implemented; continually monitor the operation and make recommendations to enhance the operation and ensure consistency and safety.
  • Handle comments, complaints and suggestions regarding policy and procedure from guests and team members; escalate issues to management when necessary.  
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of friendliness, courteousness, professionalism and service to ensure guest excellence and satisfaction.
  • Will maintain inventory of adequate supplies and will assist in the ordering of all necessary products.
  • Provide honest feedback to employees in alignment with Mississippi Aquarium values.
  • Perform all duties of housekeeping employees including mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, wiping walls, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Facility Operations.

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds helping to lift accident victims.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening, background check and SCUBA dive physical release form.
  • In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor.
  • No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work.
  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to work.
  • Physical strength, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Immunocompetence (possible exposure to infections, zoonotic and parasitic disease).
