Position Summary

The position requires a dedicated individual who will take direction from the Vice President of Facility Operations in carrying out the duties of the position. The Dive Safety Manager plans, develops, schedules, and leads all staff diving, which includes all water related activities requiring water entry, both in-house and open water.  General dive safety for all staff and guests, OSHA, AAUS, AZA dive specific compliances are met, animal health monitored, extremely well documented record keeping, oversight and implementation of visitor experiential submersed programs are the driving priorities in accomplishing the goals of this position. This position supports / liaisons with several departments including animal care, guest experience, education, sales, marketing and public relations.


  • Experience in managing a diverse staff or similar management experience required.
  • Instructor certification from a recognized diver training organization.   A minimum of 500 logged hours of Scuba Diving experience. Diving experience at an AZA facility is preferred.
  • Experience with aquatics safety, OSHA, CPR, First Aid, DAN O2 / O2 provider instructor certification and familiarity with AED preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to evaluate divers for competency in all SCUBA related activities.
  • Dive equipment maintenance tech certifications is preferred.
  • Experience with Guest interaction programs (SCUBA, SeaTrek, etc) in preferred.
  • Associates or bachelor’s degree in Biology or related is preferred. (Four years of professional dive experience may be considered in place of a degree.)
  • Experience with small boat operation and knowledge of boating safety. Captain’s six-pack license, or better is preferable
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in a constantly changing environment as well as individually, with a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be able to drive a vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license Ability to drive small-medium size trucks and tow trailer is desired.
  • Ability to travel when necessary, usually not to exceed four weeks at one time.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes evenings, weekends and holidays.  Ability to respond to emergencies on an on-call basis.
  • Proficient in Excel, MS Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness/Ability to lead training classes.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and assignments while prioritizing completion dates.
  • Be outwardly and obviously friendly and genuinely caring about all our guests and employees.
  • Be a cooperative team player and be able to work varying work schedules and assignments.
  • Maintain a positive Company attitude toward Company policies, practice, procedures, the Company Mission statement and fellow team members.

Position may involve exposure to inclement weather, dust, potentially dangerous unpredictable animal species, and potentially dangerous machinery, restraint devices and toxic chemicals and/or drugs.  Occasional use of protective clothing or equipment is required. (e.g. goggles, mask, gloves, or gowns)

  • As a member of the Mississippi Aquarium leadership team, you will be expected to lead by example when it comes to commitment and when interacting with other colleagues, co-workers and guests.
  • Administer all procedures set forth in the Mississippi Aquarium’s Diving Manual.
  • Compliance with all OSHA regulations, American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) standards.  
  • Support all dive related activities.
  • Oversees all dive operations; scheduling, meetings, activities, training and development of all areas encompassed by the dive safety program.
  • Ensure all diver activities are consistent and scope of work is in alignment with Mississippi Aquarium mission.
  • Interface with and support other departmental representatives on diving related activities.
  • Trains new diver, animal care, facility operation team members to assure compliance with established standards and protocols.
  • Conducts audits, evaluates diver competency and offers constructive criticism.
  • Plan and coordinate maintenance, repair and disinfection of SCUBA, SeaTrek and all diving/safety related equipment.
  • Maintain logs/forms and systems required for diving programs, equipment maintenance.
  • Helps maintain inventory of dive equipment, safety equipment, program wetsuits, and ordering misc. supplies.
  • Keeps work areas clean and organized and report mechanical failures to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Edit and update the Dive Safety Manual annually and/or when necessary.
  • Plan, initiate and document dive safety drills in accordance with AZA / ADPA suggested guidelines
  • Research and suggest upgrades, enhancements and changes to dive program to supervisor.
  • Assist in collecting and other animal care team activities when needed.
  • Participate and be a part of the MSAq Dive Control Board.
  • Participate in aquarium's safety committee.
  • Participate in leadership training as required.  
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds helping to lift accident victims.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening, background check and SCUBA dive physical release form.
  • In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor.
  • No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work.
  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to work.
  • Physical strength, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Immunocompetence (possible exposure to infections, zoonotic and parasitic disease).
