Position Summary


  • Bachelor's degree in English, public relations, marketing, advertising, information technology, or related field 
  • Prior experience in digital marketing, social media, web, advertising, and writing
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt writing style to different audiences 
  • Impeccable grammar, close attention to detail, and familiarity with AP Stylebook and brand guidelines 
  • Strong research, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast‐paced environment, juggle multiple deadlines, work under pressure, and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to collaborate on creative ideas and concepts as well as implement them through content
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required
  • Proficiency in web content management software, Email automation software, Adobe, and Hootsuite is preferred
  • SEO experience, Google analytics and Google AdWords experience is required

Department Overview

The Sales and Marketing Department contributes to the overall success of Mississippi Aquarium and its financial sustainability by creating brand awareness and positive public image while adhering to the mission, vision, and brand standards to generate increased attendance. This is accomplished by developing sales, marketing, and advertising strategies through a planning process that aligns with the Aquarium's sales, marketing, and communications goals and objectives. The department consists of the ticketing, event services, sales, and marketing teams. 


Position Overview

The Digital Marketing Specialist works as a part of Mississippi Aquarium's Sales and Marketing Department to support its strategic digital marketing goals. The position is responsible for maintaining the Aquarium's digital marketing platforms, including but not limited to the website, social media accounts, and email automation. The position supports sales, marketing, and communications by extracting data from these and other platforms to analyze and track web and social media analytics, making recommendations that support goals, and maximizing digital platforms with a strong focus on engagement, growth, retention, and ROI. This position will collaborate with all departments to create meaningful content that supports the Aquarium's brand. Additionally, this position will assist with other marketing efforts as needed, including writing, and editing stories, photographing events, monitoring media, creating digital marketing materials, and distributing content.


The Ideal Candidate

This person must be an analytical, creative and strategic thinker that works well in a team environment, takes direction, and manages projects with limited supervision.


This person must interact directly and collaborate with the Vice President of Sales and Marketing, the sales and marketing team, senior management, Guest Experience, and Animal Care staff throughout the Aquarium.


Under general supervision, the employee is required to exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in performing work assignments.


Website Content, Maintenance and Quality Assurance:

  • Manage the existing web site, ensuring new pages are built with consistent layouts, and implement new pages/tools to increase sales and support the Aquarium's brand
  • Implement a schedule of routine updates to the Aquarium's website and facilitate the approval process of changes
  • Accommodate requests from other departments and leadership to update information as needed
  • Apply best practices of SEO, SEM, and support other web users in these efforts
  • Troubleshoot site errors such as misspellings, broken links, and accessibility issues as needed
  • Ensure compliance with the Aquarium's brand standards and guidelines

Social Media:

  • Plan engaging content for social media distribution, which may include photos, videos, stories, links, takeovers, live videos, and special announcements received from team members and other departments; Support the Sales and Marketing Department by collecting and scheduling social media posts on all platforms (content)
  • The administrator of all social media accounts, ensuring the Aquarium's brand standards
  • Track online conversations, reply to messages, and engage with followers
  • Implement digital accessibility on all social media platforms
  • Stay abreast of social media best practices and trends, seeking opportunities that engage Aquarium guests

Analytics and Data Management: 

  • Use Google Analytics, Adobe Attribution, native social media analytics, and other analytics tools to make recommendations that support the sales, marketing, and communications strategy
  • Create and maintain website users, forms, and notifications
  • Create paid social and digital campaigns that align with the marketing and advertising strategies; monitor the results of the campaigns to sales and adjust as needed
  • Create and track URLs using UTM codes and link shorten to support sales and marketing objectives

Reputation management:

  • Track and analyze reviews on platforms such as Google, Facebook, TripAdvisor, etc
  • Sales, Marketing and Communications: 
  • Assist with general sales, marketing, and communication strategies 
  • Assist with developing content, writing, and editing stories, photographing events, monitoring media, creating marketing materials, and distributing content
  • Coordinate meetings with stakeholders and maintain communications calendar
  • Perform other duties as assigned
