Position Summary

The Assistant Manager of Education is responsible for supporting the Manager of Education in the overall supervision and operations of the Education Department atMississippi Aquarium.  This position will regularly design, develop, and implement educational programs. The incumbent will also manage educational staff, interns, and volunteers.  Successful candidates must have strong supervisory skills and experience teaching diverse audiences in formal and/or informal settings.

  1. A bachelor’s degree in biology, psychology, education, or related field
  2. Three years of supervisory experience, preferably at a zoo or aquarium, with demonstrated ability to manage people, plan programs, and work with animal ambassadors
  3. Five years of formal or informal teaching experience
  4. Must have experience with managing budgets and strategic planning
  5. Demonstrated experience working with diverse audiences
  6. Willingness to work with various animal species and maintain animal handling certifications
  7. Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and evenings
  8. Previous experience and a passion for working with children
  9. Must have strong verbal and writing skills; superior interpersonal and public speaking skills are also necessary to engage with various audiences
  10. Ability to organize, manage time, set priorities, and meet deadlines
  11. Must be an innovative thinker who is willing to embrace challenges
  12. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience handling various animal species
  2. Current knowledge of wildlife conservation, ecology, scientific research, education trends, and environmental issues
  3. At least one year of experience developing and delivering informal science programming (preferably in an AZA-accredited facility)
  4. Demonstrated experience in cultivating relationships with internal and external audiences


  1. Under direction of the Manager of Education, lead efforts to plan, develop, maintain, and improve educational programs at the Aquarium
  2. Assist with the oversight of departmental operations (e.g., monitoring budgets, performance evaluations, scheduling, payroll, and educational outreach)
  3. In collaboration with other team members, design and implement learning experiences that are tailored to the needs of a variety of audiences, including schools and camps
  4. Supervise, guide, and train a team of aquarium educators to ensure quality, consistency, and efficiency  
  5. Develop and maintain positive relationships with area schools, districts, administrators, and teachers to ensure the success of educational partnerships; design, coordinate, and facilitate professional development workshops and events
  6. Participate in brainstorming and planning sessions for the department with the Manager of Education based upon the strategic plan, trends, and survey results
  7. Responsible for the handling, presentation, care, and well-being of Mississippi Aquarium’s animal ambassadors during educational programs, including any associated travel; maintain current animal certification and proficiency
  8. Work with the Manager of Education to identify and resolve procedural issues by developing and implementing protocols
  9. Work collaboratively to evaluate the programs and progress of participants
  10. Create and develop state-of-the-art classrooms by utilizing the latest technological advances
  11. Utilize excellent customer service and innovation to address challenges and find solutions
  12. Regularly participate in environmental education organizations on a local, state, and national level
  13. Support other teams within the Mississippi Aquarium to complete special projects and tasks
  14. Inspire learning and instill a passion for the aquatic world that encourages guests to play an active role in conservation efforts
  15. Actively attend staff meetings and provide thoughtful, creative, and constructive participation
  16. Able to work a flexible schedule to satisfy operational needs, which may include working on weekends, evenings, and overnights
  17. Willing to be a part of a collaborative team environment to include, cross-training across departments, supporting other internal teams to complete special projects, and completing other duties as assigned
